Description
L’Espérance in Finisterraestraat/rue du Finistère (“end-of-the-world” street, a suitable location for a bar whose name expresses hope) has always been a well-kept secret. So well-kept, indeed, that there has always been a fear that this monument to art deco would one day be cleared out and levelled before anyone had noticed. Since the building was listed in 2008 that has been impossible, but it still comes as a relief to learn that this 1930 construction by the architect Léon Govaerts has been thoroughly refurbished and has emerged unscathed from its lengthy closure. There are only a few places left in today’s Brussels where you can find such a fine architectural entity with its interior preserved. You could describe it as a companion piece to the Archiduc, although a lot less busy. Take a look at how all the details match, from the splendid upholstery of the seats to the ironwork of the flower boxes to the clock over the bar. The hotel upstairs has been thoroughly renovated.
